A brand DMs you asking "what's your rate?" and most creators either lowball themselves out of nervousness or throw out a number with no logic behind it. This estimator fixes that by combining the two things that actually determine your price — your reach and how genuinely engaged your audience is — into one defensible number you can quote with confidence.
Why engagement rate matters more than follower count
Two creators can have wildly different value to a brand despite similar follower counts. A creator with 20,000 followers and 6% engagement has roughly 1,200 people actively liking, commenting or saving every post — a genuinely attentive audience. A creator with 200,000 followers and 0.5% engagement only has around 1,000 people engaging, despite ten times the audience size on paper. Brands that understand this pay for attention, not vanity metrics, which is exactly why this calculator weights engagement so heavily.
Typical Instagram sponsorship rates by tier in India
These are broad, real-world ranges for a single feed post or Reel at average engagement — your actual quote should move up or down from here based on niche, engagement and format:
| Tier | Followers | Typical rate per post |
|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1,000 – 10,000 | ₹1,000 – ₹12,000 |
| Micro | 10,000 – 100,000 | ₹8,000 – ₹80,000 |
| Mid-tier | 100,000 – 500,000 | ₹50,000 – ₹3,50,000 |
| Macro | 500,000 – 1,000,000 | ₹85,000 – ₹8,00,000 |
| Mega | 1,000,000+ | ₹6,00,000 and up |
Notice how wide each band is — that spread is exactly why engagement rate, niche and format need to be part of your pricing math, not an afterthought.
What actually moves your rate up
- Niche. Finance, tech and business content commands a premium because brands in those categories have higher customer value — often 30-50% above a general lifestyle rate for the same reach.
- Format. A dedicated Reel usually earns the most, a static post less, and a single Story slide the least since it disappears in 24 hours — bundle Stories into a package rather than pricing them alone.
- Usage rights and exclusivity. If a brand wants to run your content as a paid ad or wants you to avoid competitor brands for a period, that's a separate negotiation on top of your base post rate — not something to give away for free.
- Proof of past performance. A simple media kit showing reach, engagement and one or two past campaign results makes it much easier to hold your price in a negotiation.
A worked example
A food creator with 20,000 followers and 3% engagement posting a Reel gets a base rate of roughly ₹1,600 (20 × ₹80), which at 3% engagement carries a 1.0x multiplier and stays close to that number. Switch the niche to Finance (1.4x multiplier) and keep everything else the same, and the fair price roughly doubles — a clear illustration of why niche is one of the biggest levers in this estimator.
What counts as a "good" engagement rate in India?
For micro-creators, anything above 3% is generally considered strong, and above 5% is excellent. Nano-creators often post much higher engagement rates — sometimes 6-12% — because their audience feels more like a genuine community than a broadcast.
Should I calculate engagement rate from one post or several?
Always average your last 10-15 posts rather than using a single one. A single post can be skewed by an algorithm boost or a one-off viral moment, which won't reflect your typical, repeatable performance to a brand.
How much should I charge for Instagram Stories versus a feed post?
Stories are usually priced at 40-50% of your feed post rate per slide, since they disappear after 24 hours and get less sustained visibility. They work well bundled into a larger package rather than sold as a standalone deliverable.
Do bot or inactive followers hurt my rate?
Yes, indirectly — inflated follower counts with low real engagement lower your engagement rate, and experienced brands increasingly check authenticity before paying. A smaller, genuinely active audience will usually out-earn a larger, inflated one.
Is this estimate a fixed price I should always ask for?
Treat it as a starting reference, not a fixed quote. Your final rate should also reflect your negotiation, past brand deals, content quality, and any usage rights or exclusivity the brand is asking for.
